5 minutes with... Foam of the days
We continue our interviews session with Kristina Ivkovic,
the brain behind Foam Of The Days
What can we expect from your next collection?
Kitsch as always! Romantic kitsch is my favourite one! I was playing with feathers, old brooches, big bow ties and many more. Besides denim, I started upcycling different materials like stockings. The garment I cherish the most is a shirt made from old grown out stockings for ballet from the daughter of one of my seamstresses.
Who/what inspired to be a designer?
I always had a feeling I will be a designer, even before I knew it would be a profession. I was drawing clothes since I was able to hold a pen and I was always making clothes for my dolls. I have sketchbooks saved from kindergarten full of clothes but with no bodies. I remember that children were teasing me about it all the time.
What inspires you about denim and why did you choose to focus on that?
Denim is timeless! Worn out denim gives such a nice feel on your body and with time it only gets better. For me, blue denim is like a canvas, I feel I can do everything and anything with it. I don’t think I would ever get bored of it. I could say denim is the love of my life ( in a designer way). 😉
Do you have any plans to work with other fabrics?
Definitely yes! Any material which is vintage or preloved attracts me. I love the idea of not only being sustainable but also the idea of giving a new life to old pieces and telling a new story with them. I would surely be experimenting with different textiles, but denim would probably remain the main one as it’s my favourite one.
Do you design based on your style?
Yes and no. I am generally designing based on my style but not necessarily as I easily get excited about something new so I keep changing it all the time. Constant curiosity is my drive!
What’s the favourite piece you ever made?
That’s hard to say, and also it keeps changing all the time. Currently it’s a rhinestone bra and floral denim skirt embellished with rhinestones and feeders. But right after them there are couple of more items and if I think even more about it, there is the whole collection as well. 🤣 I am literally in love with every piece I make and that’s actually the reason I create clothes. It’s like a love relationship with fashion, sometimes I even feel something like butterflies in my stomach when I finish a special piece which took me couple of days to make.
Do you have a favourite designer or brand?
As I grew up watching John Galliano’s shows, he will probably be the designer I would always look up to. Apart from him, there are quite a few independent designers who I admire and I am very excited to follow their work.
